James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Nocturne in Black and Gold - The Falling Rocket, 1875, Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit
Whistler painted a series of Nocturnes which depicted quiet nighttime scenes. He simplified each painting, capturing the essence of each scene, with the intent of evoking deeper emotions from the viewer. He was influenced by Japanese artists, especially Hiroshige who also depicted similar subjects. His Nocturne series produced scathing criticism from the art critic John Ruskin, whom he eventually sued for libel.
